Hunters for BC Supports the LBN Moose Enhancement Plan

Lake Babine First Nation Moose Enhancement Plan

We are proud to support Lake Babine Nation (LBN) in their precedent-setting efforts to enhance moose populations within their territory by changing forestry practices and managing predators while robustly monitoring the outcomes. The LBN Moose Enhancement Plan is a 5-year co-management framework developed in collaboration with the BC Government to expeditiously and effectively increase moose populations within a 6500 square kilometer area around Babine Lake.

Our contribution of $5000 to LBN’s Moose Enhancement Plan specifically supports the science-based management of wolves — led by LBN’s Wildlife Guardians. The Guardians are employing ground-based hunting and trapping efforts to understand how reducing wolf densities within the territory affects the moose population. Both wolf and moose populations are being rigorously monitored by aerial surveys, remote cameras, and GPS collars. The harvested wolves are respectfully utilized for cultural and ceremonial purposes — including planned LBN youth mentorship on how to harvest, skin, and tan wolves.

We believe the LBN Moose Enhancement Plan should serve as a blueprint for other regions of British Columbia to follow given the action-oriented, community-led, and science-based approaches. We look forward to updating members on this project and appreciate your support for our organization which enables our support to high-impact projects and partnerships such as the Lake Babine Nation Moose Enhancement Plan.
